December 3, 2024—The Williamsburg Community Foundation has awarded the tenth and final surprise grant of its 25th Anniversary celebration to the Williamsburg Players, a beloved nonprofit performing arts organization. This grant is part of the Foundation’s year-long campaign to grow its community endowment and highlight its commitment to the arts and culture in the Williamsburg area.
The Williamsburg Players, chosen by Morgan Maddocks, reflects the profound impact theater can have on individuals and families.
“Theater has held a really special place in my heart,” shared Morgan. “It’s something that my father [Mike Maddocks] and I connected over growing up. I think the arts are so important…and I want to make sure people are given the opportunity to be exposed to them. Being exposed to the arts is such a good gateway to understanding more about the world and the people around us. Hopefully, this grant will help the Williamsburg Players engage the larger community.”
For 67 seasons, the Williamsburg Players has been a cornerstone of local theater, operating entirely through the dedication of volunteers.
“All of our proceeds from ticket sales and donations go toward running the theater, from covering utility costs to funding budgets for each production,” said David Stallings, the organization’s president. “Our passion is driven by volunteers who love the arts.”
Since moving into their current building in the 1980s, the Players have expanded their facilities to include a new theater addition in 2011. Each season runs from August to June, featuring five shows chosen by a season selection committee. The lineup for this season includes popular productions such as The Pajamas Game and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Upcoming shows include Death Trap (Jan. 31-Feb. 16), Harvey (Mar. 28-Apr. 13), and Pippin (May 30-June 15). The annual holiday performance of A Christmas Carol (Dec.12-15 and 19-22) has also become a cherished community tradition.
