Open a Fund

Williamsburg Community Foundation can help you create your own named fund to support the causes you care about most. This can include support for a broad array of community programs, to more specific fields of interest, or giving to a particular organization.

There are many options for giving, including stock, life insurance, IRA distributions, real estate, and bequests. We can work with you and your professional advisor to determine the best choice for your needs.

Starting a fund at your Community Foundation is quick and easy – in most cases, the fund is operational in less than 24 hours.

The Process

Identify your charitable purpose(s) or intent.
This can range from highly specific – for example, a specific organization – to general in scope, such as “general charitable purposes.”

Select the type of fund that best fulfills your goals.

Complete a simple fund agreement.
WCF staff will help you to complete an agreement that makes your intentions clear.

Name the fund.
Fund names may take virtually any form – the donor’s name or family name, a cause-related name, or something else entirely. You may also remain anonymous.

Activate the fund by making a minimum gift or pledge.
See the How to Give page for details. Once the fund is established, you can:

  • Add to the fund at any time, in any dollar amount.
  • If you are opening a donor-advised fund, specify how you wish to be recognized by grant recipients. You may make a grant using your fund’s name or you may remain anonymous.  You can recommend grants to any nonprofit organization across the United States.
