November 13, 2025, Williamsburg, VA – The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA), in partnership with the Williamsburg Community Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of the Greater Williamsburg Transportation Assistance Fund, an initiative designed to support riders of public transit in the Historic Triangle.
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, the fund was created with a focus on improving WATA’s bus stop amenities, including lighting, seating, and shelters.
“We know that something as simple as proper lighting or a shelter can influence whether people use public transit,” said Matthew Scalia, executive director of WATA. “This fund helps improve rider comfort and safety throughout the Historic Triangle. We have such a generous community and people often ask me how they can help improve the bus stops. I’m very happy to inform them of WCF and this new fund.”
This fund will also provide grants to nonprofit or governmental organizations to purchase WATA bus passes for individuals and families.
“Safe, reliable transportation connects people to jobs, schools, and services,” said Nancy Coté Sullivan, president and CEO of the Williamsburg Community Foundation. “Whether it’s improving a bus stop or helping someone afford a bus pass, this fund will make it a little easier for our neighbors who depend on public transportation. We’re grateful to this donor for seeing that need and deciding to help.”
The Community Foundation will administer the fund and work with WATA to make grants.
Community members are invited to contribute to the Greater Williamsburg Transportation Assistance Fund and help make a lasting impact on WATA’s transit system and the riders of public transportation.
