BEN ALTSHULER was a longtime Williamsburg resident and wrestling coach who left money in his estate to establish an endowment for sports and transportation.

Ben Altshuler was a longtime Williamsburg resident who had a passion for amateur sports, in particular wrestling. Upon his passing in 2007, a memorial endowment fund was created from his estate to support amateur sports as well as Ben’s other passion – increasing access to transportation so more people can participate fully in the life of the community. Since its creation, the Altshuler Fund has distributed over $300,000 in grants to the community.

The Altshuler Fund supports high school wrestling and other amateur sports programs that are not typically accessible to the general public. In addition to wrestling, previous Altshuler grants have been awarded to programs for rowing, mountain biking, and tennis.

The six grant recipients this year will use their funding for a variety of purposes. Club swim team 757 Swim will provide full and partial scholarships to swimmers with financial need. Triangle Skateboard Alliance will use its grant for skateboard and safety equipment for their summer camps.

State champions New Kent High School Wrestling is one of 6 recipients of the Benjamin Altshuler Memorial Fund grants for amateur sports in 2019. Williamsburg Community Foundation awards these grants each year, which are made possible by a generous bequest from Ben Altshuler who coached wrestling for many years on the Peninsula.
